Heart and cholesterol
Lipoprotein(a) test
Also called Lp(a), lp little a
An inherited cholesterol particle that raises heart risk.
- Typical range
- Below 30–50 mg/dL.
Why it's done
Worth checking once, especially with early heart disease in the family. It barely changes with lifestyle.
What a high result can mean
Above about 50 mg/dL (125 nmol/L) adds to heart risk; doctors then aim for a lower LDL.
