Pregnancy
Beta hCG test
Also called hCG, pregnancy blood test, b-hcg
The pregnancy hormone made by the placenta.
- Typical range
- Not pregnant: below 5 mIU/mL. In early pregnancy it roughly doubles every 2–3 days (Clarilab shows the doubling time).
Why it's done
Confirms pregnancy. Repeated 48 hours apart in early pregnancy to check it is rising as expected.
What a high result can mean
Normal in pregnancy; rises fast in the first weeks. Very high values can mean twins or, rarely, a molar pregnancy.
What a low result can mean
A slow rise or fall can mean an early loss or an ectopic pregnancy; your doctor will advise.
